Cumberland Man Arrested on Burglary and Assault Charges

A Cumberland man is arrested on assault and burglary charges. According to Cumberland Police on October 12th, 2020, at 1:40 am, The Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the first block of Chase St in reference to a breaking and entering complaint. Upon arrival, Officers contacted a female victim. The victim alleged that she was asleep in the home when she was suddenly awakened by a male subject who was actively choking her. The struggle awakened a second subject asleep in an adjacent bedroom of the home who then intervened. The male suspect then stopped assaulting the victim, stole items from the home, and left the scene on foot. The suspect was identified as 31 year old Chanton Deangelo Cleggett of Cumberland MD. Officers were able to locate the male suspect and take him into custody without further incident. As a result of the investigation, Cleggett, was charged with 1st and 2nd Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, as well as 1st, 3rd, and 4th Degree Burglary. Cleggett was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bail.
